photographers lansing mi / nina + alex city hall
Nina + Alex wanted a simple and lowkey day, a morning at a downtown Lansing MI air bnb followed by a quick walk to city hall for their early afternoon vows. Their priority: wanting the day to feel special but not overwhelming— no pressured timeline, no expansive wedding guest list. Just a pretty dress, Lansing City Hall, and their perfect documentary wedding photographer, so they could trust that their moments would be documented with love by someone who could confidently make compelling wedding photography in humble Lansing. They didn’t want a whole production or to be prodded at too much.
I’m so grateful to have been the one they chose for this.
The air bnb was low on light, except one dreamy wall of small-ish windows that made everything look as intense as it felt. The excitement & nerves were palpable as Nina got dressed and we waited for Alex to come up for their first look. I peeped him pacing from the window, waiting by the car until he got the ok.
Sweet angels, bundles of nerves, they both giggled all the way through their first look, as their parents watched from the other side of the room. I watched as they disappeared into each other, forgetting we were there. Exactly how it should be.
We walked the 5 minutes, through the roundabout and to the courthouse. Through the metal detectors where we made friends with the security guard who bonded with our bride over both being fluent en espanol.
As we approached the judges back office and the waiting areas, Nina’s dad pointed up at the top of the doorway; the judge & the brides maiden last name are the same. “A sign. A good sign.” dad, said.
As they waited their turn in line, they once again melted into one another, escaping to their own little world at every possible opportunity. Even the moments you don’t think will be romantic— the paperwork and formalities, mostly— somehow become the most treasured and valuable photos of a final gallery, I think. When times get tough in life, when the flow ebbs or the ebb flows, those will be the moments they come back to. Escaping into their own precious, vibrant inner world.
This kind of magic doesn’t care if you decide to spend 10k on a huge venue or bring your closest family to the courthouse— its everywhere your love is, and if it’s documented with care by the right photographer, it’ll be the place you get to revisit again and again, feeling those feelings each time. it really is magic.
I’ve been a Wedding Photographer in Lansing MI for 7+ years, and my journey has taught me exactly how to create and support the atmosphere around you while creating beautiful professional photos. I’m a professional vibe reader. I love to step in and offer direction when the moment calls for it, like during your portraits as newlyweds, and completely stepping back and staying quiet when moments are perfect as is. Planning a micro wedding at Lansing or Detroit City Hall? I’d love to talk more about documenting your day this way. With love, care, and the utmost space for your real memories. Not some over orchestrated version you won’t recognize in 5 years.
